How can I preserve a fine art painting for outdoors?
I've been asked to paint a acrylic based painting to be used outside. I wasn't sure if there was a finishing spray to put over the painting to make it so it is possible. They told me they wanted a painting of a horse for their homemade tombstone. any ideas on what should be used to make it water and weather proof?
Well firstly you need to ensure using uv stable colour pigments, e.g the acrylic medium will not bleach, flake or tarnish with age. This is a very tall order to achieve because look at the way paint on houses deteriorates with age and you will see you have the same mechanical problems to resolve.
A way to possibly overcome this would be to encapsulate the surfaces of the finished painting in a uv stable clear casting resin, this would weather proof the acrylic and preserve the integrity of the artwork against damage from the elements.
