Critical Evaluation of Girish Karnad as a Dramatist: A Research Paper
Girish Karnad is known for his versatile genius. It is his greatness that he is one of the greatest dramatists of Indo-Anglian literature. His greatness is hidden in quality in place of quantity. He has only five or six plays to his credit. The best of them are 'Yayati', 'Tughlaq' and 'Hayavadana'.Karnad is a film producer, an actor, and a TV artiste and above all a dramatist. Certainly, his 'Tughlaq' has been popular far and wide. It is true that Girish Karnad wept when he realized that he would not be a poet, but be only a dramatist. Karnad was deeply influenced by Ibsen, Shaw and Shakespeare. Girish Karnad was highly influenced by trends in Kannada literature and he took legend, history and myth for the plots of his plays.
His Contribution—Girish Karnad is a pioneer in the field of new drama and all his plays are actable. Their story is generally borrowed from ancient myths, folk literature, or history.
Yayati—Karnad's first play 'Yayati' presents an ancient myth from the 'Mahabharata' in modern context. It is based on the theme of responsibility. Girish Karnad's success lies in discussing modern problems with the help of an ancient myth. It is interesting to read old tales in the light of contemporary concerns.
Hayavadana—Karnad's 'Hayavadana' is based on a folk theme. Its plot is borrowed froman ancient collection of stories in Sanskrit entitled 'Kathasarilesagara'. Karnad's play is narrated by a ghost to an adventurous King.
Tughlaq—'Tughlaq' is Girish Karnad's best play. It is a historical play. There is a curious mixture of fact and fiction in the play. Its plot is based on history. The central character Muhammad Tughlaq is a well-known historical figure. Besides, a number of characters who surround him are historical. But characters like Aziz and Aazam are the dramatist's own invention. The action covers over five years. It begins in Delhi then shifts to the road to Daulatabad. No doubt, the play lacks unity of action. Some episodes are superfluous for example those episodes that deal with the woman whose child dies and with the man who has six children. The comic sub-plot dealing with the story of Aziz and Aazam parodies the story of 'Tughlaq'.
Use of Contraries—It is Karnad's skill that both incident and situation are correlated with characters. Yet events and incidents originate from the paradoxical actions of Tughlaq. The dramatic devices of parallelism and contrast have been widely employed. The plot is based on opposites and paradoxes. Intrigues enhance charm of the play. Prayer has always been regarded as means to correlate man with God. In this play, Prayer has changed its sense. In 'Tughlaq',Tughlaq killed his father at prayer time. The Amirs and Sheikhs conspire to murder Tughlaq at prayer time. Apparently, Tughlaq is very particular about prayer. Everyone is forced to pray five times a day. When he is frustrated, he bans prayer.
Blending of History and Modern Politics—As a dramatist, Karnad succeeds in blending history with modern politics. It is true that before writing 'Tughlaq',Karnad delved deep into history. Naturally it is just to call 'Tughlaq'a political play also. Karnad's 'Tughlaq'is remarkable in this respect that it may be regarded as a political allegory. An allegory provides two meanings of the action–one apparent or simple and the other implied or complex. Karnad, a modern writer, composes a play on a King of medieval India not because of any historical interest but because through him he can pass satire on contemporary political activities. In fact, Karnad has tried to evaluate Nehru's political policies through 'Tughlaq'. There is a strong parallelism between the reign of Tughlaq and Nehru era in post-independent India. Tughlaq ruled for about twenty years while Nehru dominated Indian politics for about twenty years. From 1947 to 1964 he remained the Prime Minister of India. Though Girish Karnad claims that he did not consciously wrote about the Nehru era, whenever critics pointed him out that Tughlaq was about Nehru, he felt flattered. He regards it as a compliment that thrills him. But he had not intended to be a contemporary situation. A serious study of the play exposes that it has the chaos, disillusionment and corruption that followed the Nehru era. Tughlaq was a 14th century ruler in India and Nehru dominated the 1950s and 1960s. The parallel makes Tughlaq a great political allegory. The reign of Tughlaq and the rapid disintegration of his personality attract a modern reader for Nehru too passed through such phases and brought about frustration and corruption throughout the nation.
Use of Symbolism—Girish Karnad is a modern dramatist and wishes to express his viewpoint through symbols. For example, 'Tughlaq' by Girish Karnad is a great symbolical play. It is true one can enjoy the play on the stage without paying much attention to its rich and complex symbolism. The play has an interesting story, an organic plot, scope for spectacle and use of dramatic conventions like the comic pair, Aziz and Aazam. Besides it, the play reflects the complex political mood of disillusionment which followed the Nehru era of idealism in the country. In 'Tughlaq',the game of chess has its own symbolic value. For example in Scene II, we find that Muhammad is bent over a chess-board. He is excited and his face is shining with a mysterious smile. Just then his step mother appears and Muhammad welcomes her saying that he has got success in solving a difficult problem in chess. In fact he is not talking about a problem related to chess but the rebellion of Ain-Ul-Mulk. Ain-Ul-Mulk is marching on to attack Delhi. In childhood, he was the Sultan's companion. At present, it had become a great problem for the Sultan was short of force. He had only six thousand soldiers. He plays cunning and invites Sheikh Imam-Ud-Din to address a public meeting in Delhi though he knows well that Sheikh has been provoking people to rebel against the Sultan. In appearance, Sheikh looks like the Sultan. When Sheikh holds a meeting nobody goes to hear him. Now Tughlaq requests Sheikh to go to Ain-Ul-Mulk as a royal representative to ask him not to rebel. If a battle takes place, thousands of innocent Muslims will die unnecessarily. The plea appeals Sheikh who puts on a royal robe to represent the Sultan. When Ain-Ul-Mulk sees Sheikh, he takes him for the Sultan. Just then Sheikh is killed. Ain-Ul-Mulk has to surrender and seek pardon. It is thus, every political problem is a chess problem to him and he solves accordingly.
Art of Plot Construction—As a play writer, Girish Karnad pays a great attention to the plot. He knits it so well that each incident gets closely related to the other. To know Karnad's skill 'Tughlaq' is an ideal play. It is a tragedy of intrigue. It throws light on the political conditions of the middle ages. Tughlaq ruled India in the 14th century. He was surrounded with a number of intrigues played against him to make him successful or even to kill him. The courtiers had a secret hand in them. Their implied purpose was to reduce Tughlaq to nothing so that he might not obstruct their ways. It was a matter of great pity that even his sons and other members of the royal family supported the nobles who had been conspiring against Tughlaq. Tughlaq's network was so perfect that he always came to know about that before hand. It made him safe and successful. Karnad's 'Tughlaq' is a tragedy of intrigues for it has a number of intrigues of various nature.
Art of Characterisation—Karnad employs the devices of dialogue, contrast, parallelism and irony for characterisation. Only those points of character are emphasised, which develop the plot. Tughlaq has been portrayed with great psychological depth. The dramatist projects the paradoxes in the complex personality of Tughlaq who dreams and acts. He is benevolent and cruel. It is a great irony that Tughlaq is called a mad man. The simple reason behind it his irrational behaviour. He orders people to march back to Delhi. It becomes an evidence of his madness. He sends Aziz as a high officer in the Deccan with the instruction that he should disappear then after. Tughlaq becomes a terror to his people. His balance of mind is lost.
Conclusion—Thus, Girish Karnad is known for his versatile genius. He is one of the greatest dramatists of Indo-Anglian literature.
