Tinkle Tinkle Big Star!
Anant Pai is his real name. Uncle Pai is what the world called him. And still does, fondly.
But for me, he was the ‘P(a)ied Piper'. And I followed him blindly. Now what does that make me, I wonder?

Anyways, bad jokes apart, coming back to the reason for this post.. For the few readers who cared to read my earlier post, I'm still on a ‘comic'al trip. The world of storybooks, comics, simply seductive.
The funnily named Tinkle, along with another giant, Amar Chitra Katha were comics which we could and do take a lot of pride in. It was the Tom & Jerry of comics with a loyal fan following.
Over the years Tinkle has built a loyalty that few Indian comics can boast of. For schoolchildren yet to catch onto video games, computers/internet & hard core television, it was a ‘cult' brand.
The characters it had created were so simple, earthy & Indian. Yet so memorable. Whether it was the simpleton, the big headed, blockhead Suppandi who made us laugh with his silly antics, the evil Tantri the Mantri who regaled us with his poor attempts at dislodging Raja Hooja (ha! What a funny name) and usurping power. Each time he would try, he would fall flat on his face. I used to laugh my guts out at Shikari Shambhu (remember his getup? it was parodied by quite a few comedians in quite a few Hindi movies) for his vain boasts on his courage, with the heart of a coward but always ending up as the unlikely hero.Then there were the animal characters, Kalia the crow, Chamatka the fox, Doob Doob the crocodile.No tomtom-ing, all simple characters out to entertain.
In fact such was the impact that Atal Bihari Vajpayee (our ex prime minister), was a huge fan & had remarked that in terms of popularity, Tinkle comes right after Chacha Nehru! Also, some characters have entered our lexicon forever. Suppandi-giri today is such an apt word for everything that's foolish, idiotic & yokelish.
Of course, times change, we moved on and so did Tinkle..We latched onto many things more intellectual, more edgy and Tinkle, like any storybook lost its charm for us. It too stepped in with the times, making changes to its design, making it a bit more eye catchy, taking it online, introducing new characters..All moves much needed to sustain a comic in these times of the Nintendo & PSP..
Maybe Tinkle's popularity could be attributed to the lack of options in the pre liberalization era. Maybe. But can't forget the fact that it was an indelible part of my childhood.
And I still see small kids hooked onto Tinkle. It still hasn't lost out on its charm. And I still see Uncle Pai (God bless the man) regaling children with his Q&A sessions & stories

Does anyone know this book that has a ratman who writes comics, a boy who reads them, and a girl who moved?
It's like, in different perspectives. The girl just moved and she isn't aware of her uncle's existence. The boy is kind of a loser and goes to this library/book store to read hand-made comics left by this ratman who ends up being the girl's uncle. All three of them wind up together and I think there's like, a boat chase scene or something.
I read this book in middle school and loved it, but for the life of me can't remember the name! If anyone knows it and can tell me the title, they'd be my new hero!
