Ken Rosewall's and Margaret Court's victories in the 1970 U.S. Open tennis tournament
Ken Rosewall won the 1970 U.S. Open tennis tournament in the men's singles division. Margaret Court won the women's singles and was also a part of the women's doubles and mixed doubles championship teams.
The top five seeds in the men's singles division were from Australia. They were, from first to fifth, Rod Laver, John Newcombe, Ken Rosewall, Tony Roche, and Roy Emerson. Laver and Emerson would go out in the fourth round, Newcombe would lose in the semifinals, and Rosewall and Roche would meet up in the finals.
Arthur Ashe was also seeded as a top 10 player. He was seeded seventh two years after winning the tournament in 1968. He would eventually lose to Newcombe 1-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-7 in the quarterfinals. In that same year, Ashe would win the Australian Open.
After Newcombe defeated Ashe, he faced the 35-year-old Rosewall in the semifinals. Rosewall took care of Newcombe in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the finals against Tony Roche.
In the quarterfinals, Roche faced unseeded Brian Fairlie. Fairlie's run ended when he lost in straight sets to the fourth-seeded Roche. Cliff Richey advanced to the semifinals to face Roche after defeating Dennis Ralston in straight sets. Richey would go no further in the tournament, however, as Roche dismantled him in straight sets.
Roche beat Rosewall in the first set of the final match. From there, Rosewall was able to withstand three break points at 5-6 in the third set and a tight third set tiebreak to win the final match 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Additionally, he cracked his favorite wooden racket during the match.
The Australians were also well-represented on the women's side of the 1970 U.S. Open. Margaret Court was the number 1 overall seed in women's singles and Kerry Melville and Judy Dalton rounded out the top eight seeds. Court waltzed through the quarterfinals and semifinals to get to the final where she faced Rosie Casals of the USA. Court lost her only set of the tournament in the final against Casals but would ultimately recover for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory.
With the victory over Casals, Court became the second woman to win the Grand Slam. It was her fourth career victory at the U.S. Open and 20th career win at a Grand Slam tournament. An Australian herself, Court had dominated the Australian Open in the decade leading up to 1970. She had won the Australian Open ever year from 1960 until then with the exception of 1967 and 1968.
Court wasn't done after winning the women's singles of the 1970 U.S. Open. She won the first ever U.S. Open triple crown by winning both the women's doubles and the mixed doubles tournaments. In women's doubles, she teamed up with Judy Tegart Dalton to defeat Rosemary Sacals and Virginia Wade 6-3, 6-4 in the finals. In mixed doubles, she teamed up with Marty Riessen to defeat Judy Tegart Dalton and Frew McMillan 6-4, 6-4 in the finals. For her three victories, Court took home $9,500 in prize money.
