Origin of Salwar Kameez - Tale of Ethnicity, Retold in Fabric
Amidst its royal grandeur, enigmatic feel and feminine charm salwar kameez breathes the sighs of history. With its roots deeply seated in the antiquities of medieval India, the origin of Salwar Kameez still carries the rich sartorial chronicle amidst its fall, stitch, luster and feel.
In the hinter lands of Central Asia, which was then under the domination of Iranian and Turkish people; Shalwar kameez as an expression of Indian ethnicity made its presence felt for the very first time. The general habit of the Iranian and Turkish people were putting in baggy trousers whilst drawing it tight with strings. Research says that this pattern was indeed the progenitor of today’s shalwar kameez. Thus this era actually states the origin of salwar kameez.
The salwar is basically a loose trouser, which narrows down a bit towards the bottom. However the Iranian and Turkish concept of fastening it with string later was largely replaced by the concept of elastic belt. On the other hand the kameez is more like a long shirt or tunic like apparel, which is further adorned by a dupatta.
Not only in Central Asia, has origin of salwar kameez unveiled the fact that, even the court nobles of the Qajar and Ottoman dynasty preserved shalwar kameez as their court attire. However in India the style of salwar kameez was imported as an immediate effect of Muslim invasion, back in the 12th century. The Turko Iranian regime and then followed by the Mughal regime in India established the Iranian fashion of Indian salwar kameez while offering it a typical Mughal overtone. Hence it won’t be an overstatement to say that it was the Mughal Dynasty, which upheld the tradition of royal ethnicity amidst the feminine charm of Indian churidar or salwar kameez. The tale of ethnicity, which originated in India with the Mughals later, gained a remarkable dimension with the popularity of the attire.
North India, especially Punjab greeted Salwar kameez with an added enthusiasm and within no time churidar salwar kameez with dupatta became the emblem of Punjabi fashion. Liked for its archetypal comfort friendly aspect Salwar kameez had by then established itself more than being just traditional attire. Alike various kinds of sarees, there are many styles in Salwar Kameez in today’s era.
What initiated as just a court costume gradually broke the boundaries of court rooms and perfumed palaces while reaching the mass, appealing them by its sheer graceful majesty and feminine eloquence. The journey was long, yet rich. Consequently, what followed are a series of styles and designs, varied materials and patterns to suit the changing taste of India. Not only Punjab, but whole of India embraced various styles in Salwar Kameez as one of the decent, dramatic and indeed royal apparel to silhouette the enigmatic brilliance of a woman.
Unlike any other Indian dress, salwar kameez has transformed over time. With its pristine origin hinting at the Mughal courtroom this dress is almost synonymous with the Indian National dress along with the Indian saree.

How do legends, myths and fables begin?
All stories that are retold don't get mistaken for actual events, but for myths and legends there is a grey area.
Is it because there is a grain of truth embedded in these myths? Does that truth get distorted over time and simply becomes a legend, a bedtime story?
Is humankind rubbish at record keeping over hundreds of thousands of years- or is it only current thinking that tells us these events did not happen, when in fact they actually did.

There often is a grain of truth in them, but the point about myths especially isn't whether they're literally true, instead they can express deeper truths. (Sorry if I'm being too simplistic. What I mean is that they exist for more important reasons than just to retell any grain of truth in them.)
I think how they actually begin is an interesting question - they often evolve from earlier forms of the myth, but I can't answer how they begin. Joseph Campbell is a good writer to read about mythology.
This quotation from the book "Before Philosophy" by Henri Frankfort et al, is fairly interesting:
"...the ancients told myths instead of presenting an analysis or conclusions. We would explain, for instance, that certain atmospheric changes broke a drought and brought about rain. The Babylonians observed the same facts but experienced them as the intervention of the gigantic bird Imduqud which came to their rescue. It covered the sky with the black storm clouds of its wings and devoured the Bull of Heaven, whose hot breath had scorched the crops.
In telling such a myth, the ancients did not intend to provide entertainment. Neither did they seek, in a detached way and without ulterior motives, for intelligible explanations of the natural phenomena. They were recounting events in which they were involved to the extent of their very existence. They experienced, directly, a conflict of powers, one hostile to the harvest upon which they depended, the other frightening but beneficial: the thunderstorm reprieved them in the nick of time by defeating and utterly destroying the drought. The images had already become traditional at the time when we meet them in art and literature, but originally they must have been seen in the revelation which the experience entailed. They are products of imagination, but they are not mere fantasy."
