Restless Pets – Are Restless Pets Keeping You Up At Night And Tips On Solving This Problem?

I recently read an article about how to calm down restless pets at night and found it to provide only a sliver of useful information much of which wouldn't even start to help the average owner of a night stalking, blind rattling, mind twisting, tranquility busting, and sleep depriving cat or dog. Hopefully, if you fall into this category the few tips incorporated in this article will help those huge bags under your eyes start subside as your  trouble making pet slips into a peaceful slumber.

Over the past 30 years or so my family has always had a least one pet but more often than not 2 or 3 with many of them having sleep problems. The trick was finding what was causing their restlessness. While there were some common threads, in many cases the main cause or causes were quite different.

My most recent encounter with a restless pet happened a little less than a year ago when stray full grown large black and white male cat was hanging around. We had just lost our female Burmanese after an amazing 20 year run (91 in human years) and the timing just seemed right to give this cat a home.

So we worked to tame it, eventually took it in for shots, and had it neutered. All was going along well for a few day until one night somewhere between 11:30 pm and 2:30 a.m. the madness started. Our new pets had insomnia which would kick in around midnight with a chorus of loud blind rattling and meowing which would continue until one of us got up and spent the rest of the night on the couch.

After a few months of sleeping on the couch combined with chiropractic care I was beginning to wonder what I had gotten myself into and suspected   that the our newest family member may have been abandoned for this very reason. At this point I became more determined than ever to solve this nightly symphony of cat misbehavior.

So I thought back on years gone by and the many pets who loved the nightlife and slept all day. In fact, we once had a cat named Disco Toney because he loved the nightlife so, so, much.

Now in Disco Toney's case it was all about food, and not any food either it had to be a certain type of canned food. Apparently, whatever type of food Disco Toney was able to forage up in the wild reminded him of chicken and gravy. I would say when Disco was roaming wild if you were a chicken who had found a bowl of gravy in the trash you would be in big trouble. Once we started giving him a can of chicken and gravy just before bedtime he slept like a baby. We had solved the mystery.

With our newest addition I embarked on this same path buying every flavor of food I could think of but nothing seemed to work. Then one night I heard an owl just outside of our bedroom windows screeching as our new cat Joey incessantly rattled the blinds. Could Joey have been protected by one of the deadliest nighttime predators in the sky? Or was he simply trying to avoid this predator while in the wild?

I thought for a minute and then raised the blinds. The restlessness he was feeling seemed to melt away and we never had a problem again.

*Make sure their blankets are clean.

*If you have cats make sure their litter boxes are clean.

*Is there another cat or dog coming around at night that is making them restless?

*Does their sleeplessness seem to coincide with changes in barometric pressure or other weather changes?

*Is it possible they could have internal parasites such as roundworms. These can be inherited and are fairly common in puppies.

*Has something been moved that they prize? Doggy bone, food dish, blanket, or pet toys.

*Do they have an upset stomach? Sometimes table scraps are too rich for small digestive systems and should be closely monitored if given at all.

Nile Crocodile or Australian saltwater croc?

which is the more deadly predator? what would happen if the two were in the same habitat for whatever reason?

and also what are the main differences in appearance and habits etc, if any, between the two?

Saltwater Crocodiles are known to kill Water Buffalo!

Lets meet the opponents-

SALTWATER CROCODILE

Tantics and Strengths: As an ambush predator, it usually waits for its prey to get close to the water's edge before striking without warning and using its great strength to drag the animal back into the water. Most prey animals are killed by the huge jaw pressure of the crocodile, although some animals may be incidentally drowned. It is an immensely powerful animal, having the strength to drag a fully grown water buffalo into a river, or crush a full-grown bovid's skull between its jaws.

In its most deadly attack, nicknamed the "Death Roll," it grabs onto the animal and rolls powerfully. This is designed to initially throw any struggling large animal off balance making it easier to drag it into the water. The "Death Roll" is also utilised as a method for tearing apart large animals once they are dead. In one case in Northern Australia in 1939, a prize Suffolk stallion weighing over 1 tonne (2,205 lb) was killed, apparently in under a minute, by a large crocodile.

In the water, a crocodile is twice as powerful as it is on land and much faster. A healthy crocodile can swim as fast as a dolphin in short bursts. A crocodile has the power and strength to pull a water buffalo weighing 2200 pounds in the water. Capturing crocodiles takes manpower and a strong rope. To pull and jump on a 16 foot saltie will take 10 strong men using all their strength if the crocodile feels threatened.

They are extremely powerful animals, if you see this animal upclose you indeed find out what I mean!

They have been known to have shark remains in their stomachs.

Saltwater crocodile speed underwater can be 15 to 18 miles per hour in short bursts, but when cruising can go 2 to 3 miles.

A 16 foot Saltwater Crocodile in Australia had a bite force of 3900 pounds per square inch!

Male Saltwater Crocodiles mostly avoid other males, but occasionally fight with other males to the death.

NILE CROCODILE-
For the Nile Crocodile in a same length it is slighty heavier than the Salty.

Diet: Hatchlings eat insects and small aquatic invertebrates, and quickly graduate to amphibians, reptiles, and birds. But even as an adult, 70% of a Nile crocodile's diet is fish and other small vertebrates, though adult crocodiles can potentially eat nearly any vertebrate that comes to take a drink at the edge of the water, the exception being mature elephants and hippopotamuses. Adult Nile Crocodiles are known to eat zebras, young hippopotamuses, buffalo, warthogs, hyenas, baboons, antelope like the Blue Wildebeest, giraffe, big cats and other crocodiles.

Adult Nile crocodiles use their bodies and tail to herd groups of fish toward a bank, and eat them with quick sideways jerks of their heads. They also cooperate, blocking migrating fish by forming a semicircle across the river. The most dominant crocodile eats first.

Their ability to lie concealed with most of their body underwater, combined with their speed over short distances, makes them effective opportunistic hunters of larger prey. They grab such prey in their powerful jaws, drag it into the water, and hold it underneath until it drowns. They will also scavenge kills, although they avoid rotting meat. Groups of Nile crocodiles may travel hundreds of meters (yards) from a waterway to feast on a carcass.

Once their prey is dead, they rip off and swallow chunks of flesh. When groups of Nile crocodiles are sharing a kill, they use each other for leverage, biting down hard and then twisting their body to tear off large pieces of meat. This is called the death roll. They may also get the necessary leverage by lodging their prey under branches or stones, before rolling and ripping.

Nile crocodiles are reputed to have a symbiotic relationship with certain birds like the spur-winged plover. According to reports, the crocodile opens its mouth wide, and then the bird picks pieces of meat from between the crocodile's teeth. This has proven hard to verify, and is probably not a true symbiotic relationship.

The Saltwater Crocodile doesn't get tired as fast in the water, more agile in the water and a little faster underwater.

Nile Crocodile is heavier and has a stronger bite force, but not by much. They both have similar jaw structure.

Both have rough, thick skin, but the Nile Crocodiles has a bit more. Not much of a difference, they both have about the same intelligence.

So the Saltwater Crocodile is more aggresive, but the Nile Crocodile would weigh a little more at the same lengths, but It varies in the certain individuals, but mainly Adult Male Nile Crocodiles that are fully grown are usually bulkier, not every time. I've seen many skinny Nile Crocodiles, but as they get older and bigger they are usually bulkier.

The average male Saltwater Crocodile is usually larger than a Nile Crocodile male, but yes some Nile Crocodiles are bigger than Saltwater Crocodiles.

But most likely a 80 year Saltwater Crocodile would be larger than a 80 year old Nile Crocodile, but it depends on their diet, the weather and a whole bunch more.

HOW THEY FIGHT?

They fight by try to rip each others legs, tails, and kill each other!

I have seen many documentaries where Saltwater Crocodile bite each other rather than head butt, they bite fast, hard, and shake or death roll.

They usually head-butt when trying to resolve disputes or when arguing. When they want something they will bite and try to rip something apart! Both Nile Crocodile and Saltwater Crocodile fight in similar ways.

I watched Steve Irwin and Brady Barr catch Crocodiles, usually when Brady Barr catches the Nile Crocodile they get tired faster, and struggle less. When I see Steve Irwin and Brady Barr catch Saltwater Crocodiles, they death roll, head shake and do anything possible to get out! Saltwater Crocodiles are usually faster and have more ego. They don't get tired as fast.

I think a 16 foot Nile Croc Vs. 16 foot Saltie, means the Saltie would win 6-8/10 times.
