Samurai Heroes; Japanese Prints of the Warriors of the Suikoden
The original story first appears as a factual account of rebellion in 13th century China and concerns the outlaw Song Jiang. This less than glamourous account was quite different to the editions that are popular today. But by the middle ages Song Jiang's outlaws had grown in number from thirty-six to the one hundred and eight we are familiar with and their deeds had become a lot more fantastical. The earliest complete edition is from the late sixteenth century and was probably written down by the scholar Shi Nai'an. But it is the Japanese who took the story on, changing the characters and creating Suikoden fever in the early part of the nineteenth century. It is from this period that the striking images by Hokusai and Kuniyoshi come.
A new series of translations by Kyokutie Bakin appeared in Japan in 1805 illustrated by the famous woodblock artist Hokusai. It was not until 1827 when the relatively unknown artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi was commissioned to illustrate the story in single, full colour woodblock prints that the craze really took off. Kuniyoshi created fantastical scenarios for the heroes but also turned them into the kinds of superhero that we might recognise today in action heroes and fantasy games. He further decided to give all of them elaborate full body tattoos, thus starting an unstoppable craze for an art-form that remains vital right across the world.
Kuniyoshi changed the Chinese names to Japanese and chose to picture the most lurid images he could and in the most explosive designs yet seen in Japanese prints. For example we see Gyoja Busho killing a huge tiger with his bare hands or Chusenko Teitokusen driving his sword into the throat of a giant snake or Kaosho Rochishin splitting a pine tree in two with his great iron club.
Street toughs, firemen and samurai copied the printed heroes and started to have themselves tattooed with the lurid dragons and snaking designs that Kuniyoshi had pictured. Other artists, seeing the success of the series followed suite and produced their own series or prints in the same style on similar themes. Kuniyoshi himself went onto to produce many dozens of print series in the same manner on heroic subjects.
The legacy of Kuniyoshi's vision of the warrior is everywhere. In part during a time of deep national anxiety, warrior prints of past heroes gave the Japanese an emblem of their warlike past... a reassurance, that given the threat from encroaching western powers and their lack of experience of conflict in recent times, that they were still a powerful and warlike people. This vision of tough military prowess informs the whole samurai legacy that we see today. In truth, there had been no fighting samurai in Japan since the sixteenth century. The great movies of Akira Kurosawa owe their entire imagery to these musha-e or warrior prints of the nineteenth century. The plethora of video and computer games, of anime and manga comics owe a vast debt to Kuniyoshi's great vision, some very directly as in the RPG game Suikoden or the TV series The Water Margin.
What of these prints now? Most large international museums will have some editions of the prints and it's worth asking just to have the opportunity to see them first hand. They do sometimes come up for sale and our own gallery; Toshidama Gallery is showing Suikoden and other warrior prints in spring 2011. If you can, I strongly urge you to look at these great works of art and if you can invest in some of the great cultural icons of the nineteenth century.

How can I aquire the print of "escaped conviction" by "alex Pardee"? There were only 200 and sold out in 2007.?
I am new to art and really fell in love with this piece. They seem sold out and can't find them on line, is there a forum or do i talk to a dealer or something?? Any advise on how I would go about acquiring a print would be most appreciated.
