How long do I have to be a patrolman before I can test for detective?
I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. I want to join the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and be a detective or, failing that, get into undercover work. I have an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy (although still in the Reserve), and I already have 90 hours toward a bachelor's degree which I will be finishing in the next year or two. Although I was originally a theatre major, I'm now pursuing a B.A. in Political Science.
How long do I have to be an IMPD patrolman before I can test for detective?

Don't know about IMPD but my department and most large city departments require 2 years on the job before detective testing. I was not promoted off the test until 5 years after scoring well.
I'm unclear what you mean by undercover. You can usually become a soft or plain clothes officer after you are done with probation. that is if you shown yourself to be an aggressive and proactive cop who can be trusted to do things right.
Undercover officers take on and live the persona of someone else to infiltrate criminal conspiracies. You are that other person 24/7, often for many many months.
Since the days of Red Squads in the 60's very few municipal departments have anything like that. They don't have the manpower or budget. Even with Indianapolis becoming a Metro they are still not that large a department. Chicago has 13,000 officers and outside of IAD guys (they are undercover as police officers) you can count the undercover officers on one hand.
