A gambler who sold his wife under the spell of the Devil!
A gambler who sold his wife under the spell of the Devil!
I once knew a gambler. He used to frequent a small café house round the corner of his house. The gambling game was set at a table at the back of the joint. He was a tiler of the first order. Very hard working person. He loved gambling and preferred straight Poker to other types of gambling.
He used to earn a good living. He rented a flat for him and his family. He was happily married with four children, two boys and two girls. He furnished his flat with good furniture. He managed his life, having a respectful salary, and working for a building company.
The story took place in the South of France in a very small town not so far away from the sea. He sent his children to school and they were doing very well. All went smoothly. Every evening he came back from work except for the week end. He had his regular shower and sat with his family for sometime watching TV with the kinds while his wife made super. Around nine o'clock in the evening he used to dress up and go to his joint to play with his fellow gamblers.
At the beginning of his table rounds he gained some money which wet his appetite and made him continue to frequent his gambling place, but this time at everyday basis.
Few months went by and he had some problems and started to lose money. His wife and his children, being in the primary and secondary schools, did not know that the head of the family gambles. He told them every time he went for the evening he was going to have some coffee and a friendly talk with his friends.
Losing money, now he was hooked properly by the Devil of gambling, made him draw on the family budget. His wife complained that the children did not have enough food to eat. They needed clothing and some stuff for their schools.
His answers ware becoming harder and harder. His relationship with his own children were becoming ruthless and he was rude to the whole family. He became hard inside him and his featured hardened and became stone-like.
The Devil drew him more and more into gambling and he suffered bigger losses every night. He had to sell his car in order to pay back his gambling debts.
His time with the children in the evenings was cut short and he spent few minutes with them and then went to the Devil's table.
Little by little becoming harder and harder like iron and cold like an iceberg he used to come from his café house at midnight. His wife complained more and more now knowing about his gabling drug. He sank his debts in drinking alcohol. Then one Sunday he had a big row with his wife and he beat her. The beating up treatment for his wife came in exchange for her complaints about neglecting his family and his children suffered.
The children's sufferings were reflected on their work at school. One of the children suffered from disequilibrium of personality after one year of this situation at home.
The quality of his work was directly affected and his boss complained about his coming late to work tired and did not feel like working. He asked for more salary but the work he did was not good enough to be considered by the boss. The result of this culminated in having a big row with his boss and the latter dismissed him from his work.
Now, our gambler, lost his car, lost his job and was continually beating up his wife, the children also shared some slaps with the poor mother in the evenings for demanding some cookies and chocolates, to release his anger of losing at the gambling table.
His mind and heart as well as soul and body were immersed completely with gambling. The skin of his wife was becoming more blue and red. His children lost their confidence in themselves and their father.
Then one day, and after two years of this terrible life, the children came back from school with bad grades, they saw that the big screened Television disappeared from the sitting room. Few days later their father, suffering more losses at the table of the Devil for the bids now are bigger and bigger, sold the two laptop computers he had bought for his children at the occasion of their birthdays.
The wife went many times during these two years to the local social center asking assistance and help. She was advised to talk sense to her husband at every time for they could do nothing. The neighbors lliving in the fist floor heard the shouting of the usual rows between the gambler and his wife.
They advised her to go to the police and complaint about her situation and her being beaten up. But the wife did not make such a move for fear he would be ruthless to the children.
The gambler now, was a professional one, gaining some of his lost money back at times but losing a lot more in exchange. He became a rock hard hearted. His mind could not be liberated from the bug of gambling. He plunged everyday more and more in the abysmal labyrinth of the game. He dived into the dark cave of animosity and became a monster on two legs, a real zombie and a living dead. Nothing could talk sense into his head and nothing could make him listen to reason.
His wife had to find work at the green grocer shop nearby their home and gained enough to keep the kettle boiling. She had to sell all her jewelry after fifteen years of good marriage to reimburse her husbands debts. She did not want, though she thought many times about it, to ask for a divorce and return to her father's house in Tunisia, for they were immigrants from Tunisia to France.
The professional gambler was no more a husband, no more a father and no more a human being. The only thing that preoccupied his mind was the set of cards at the gambling table. One Saturday evening the husband, now a monster of Frankstein, came back earlier than usual from the Café house accompanied with two men.
He invited the two visitors, who looked like him with hard rock expressionless faces, on the floor in the sitting room on an old carpet where the children were having some sandwiches to eat with some water on a side table.
The husband demanded of his wife to prepare some coffee for his friends. She did as she was told and prepared some coffee for the two rugged inhumans sitting now on the floor.
The husband followed his wife to the small kitchen and looking at his wife as if she was a carpet on the wall. He said: I have lost a lot of money, now in debts down to my ears. She looked him in the face and demanded who were the two guys sitting in the sitting room with her children.
The husband told her they were his gambling close friends. She asked him why did they come to their home for? The husband told her that he had made a bid on her if he lost and he lost and now they came to reclaim their debt.
